3 (+1) more   Petter M types arrive

My mania deepens and these three (now 4) just had to join the throng. Unusually I only had to drive 10 miles for this lot.
A 6hp Calibrater model . Serial 77529 - mid 1934

Appears complete and has both compression, and that great rarity, no frost cracks :-) Has gear guard,  paraffin ring, and Calibrater glass. Spent its working life on a sawmill near Dulverton in the upper Exe valley. Ceased work about 15 years ago and has been dry stored since. I have been promised its paperwork. So much paint and the original transfer (decal) survive that a clean and any necessary mechanical tweaks is all this one will get. The skids are massive and clearly made with no regard to the cost of timber. I could make two original style trolleys from the skids !!

A 3 hp with twin solid flywheels. serial 53598 - 1923

Previously "restored" so just needs repainting and the usual big and small end sort !

Probably originally part of a direct coupled genny set as pictured in the 1921 catalogue (thanks Brad:-). Note the spacer in the exhaust. Best guess is that this was to give clearance for the radiator support brackets.

A 5hp Junior Oil Engine  #41111 from 1915

Initially I thought this a "heinz 57" engine. However careful dismantling has changed that view. I know think that it is largely original but had a factory rebore/rebuild in May 1957 during which several parts were upgraded.  It was the 1011 5hp made so was presumably either a flat head or perhaps a jellymould when it first left the works. It is possible that an earlier factory rebuild was done in the 1920s during which the original carb, reed valve housing and pump were replaced. It is equally possible that in 1957 Petter used whatever they had left. If you have an early engine or can throw any light on this engine do please contact me.

During that presumed rebuild it was overbored and Petter therefore replaced the original piston with the later standard. That necessitated a change of head and by that date Petter probably only had the Petrol head and Paraffin ring in stock. The, relative lack of water passages,  in the crankcase suggest an early example and this is supported by it being the open arch base and not having a casting date. The primer cup drilling is in an unusual position and the exhaust flange studs are the right spacing for a 3hp rather than a 5hp pot. (Did early models have a smaller pot or a larger one on a small flange?  The latter would likely have suffered breakages). The main butterfly valve has two lobes and is probably original although the carb looks post 1919. The diaphragm operated pump is the usual design but smaller and with 1/8" BSP threads rather than the usual 1/4" BSP. Its also on a later style mount plate bearing the full Petter patent wording. It also screws into its base whereas a one piece casting is the norm. The footvalve is most unusual and presumed to be original.   The oiler looks original but has been relocated and drips into an early 20s reed valve housing

Although neither flywheel is numbered the surviving key is correctly marked 41111

The crankshaft has the early 1 5/8" journals whilst the white metal big end has the early style large oilway fed by a pick up drilling in the base of the conrod.

It worked with 4 others in a local shed where toys were made.

A 1KW direct coupled genny set on cast base with engine serial 11006

A victim of a past restoration but readily restorable and fairly rare. Also came with a cobbled switchboard which includes all the bits I need to restore my Petterlight switchboard. Don't yet know if the dynamo will work. The engine is the 1000rpm 2hp version of the 1.5 hp VZ and the base carries part number VZ26303. The governer housing is tiny compared to ring oiled versions, a redesign no doubt forced by the addition of the Calibrater.
