A most unusual puzzle (pics below text) |
As of 14 January this engine is definitely identified as a rare Petter Junior Eight. A hybrid of 8hp spark ignition Junior and type VC.
Recently a friend kindly let me examine and photograph this interesting engine. Its undoubtedly a Petter but what type? Although in a poor state all the important bits are there and its certainly worthy of restoration in my view. The hope is that someone can identify it and knows where a similar engine is so that parts may be copied.
It is a two-stroke semi-diesel and its size suggests an output of 8-10hp. The general style is reminiscent of a VC (12+hp) however the VC usually has ring-oiled mains and a single flywheel on an outrigger bearing. The bore is about 6" with main lubrication by size 5 Stauffer greasers. There is no discernable casting date or serial number and that together with the grease lubrication and extremely robust construction suggest a date of the 19 teens (certainly pre 1922). The tube in the head suggests air-start. The sprayer is externally similar to that fitted to the S type. The fuel-spray pump is on the other side to that seen on the VC although this may simply indicate a reverse rotation engine.
The only visible part number is VB which, as regular readers of my drivel will know, was also used on the 8hp M type and 5-8 hp S types. I have now added a pic of the fuel sprayer which stamped 20 is identical to that used on the 5-6hp S type. It does however have a square end which may not be original.
The head has now been cleaned and shows a part number of 5432. there is also a "W" over one of the core plugs.
